Craig Rutherford

Craig Rutherford
Role: Community Development Officer

Bio
I was born in Middlesbrough and brought up in Barrow from a young age. I took on the post of Community Development Officer in September 2008 after previously working as a coach for Inside Out Soccer Schools, developing young talent in and anround the Barrow area.

Playing Experience:
I have played football locally from the age of 10 and my clubs have included Barrow Celtic Juniors, Dalton United and currently Holker Old Boys. I have been involved with Barrow AFC for a number of years, firstly through captaining the reserve side between 2002-2004 and making 7 first team appearances during that time under Kenny Lowe and Lee Turnbull.

Coaching Qualifications:

  • FA level 1 and 2 Certificate on coaching Football
  • Completed base course of FA level 3 and currently awaiting assessment
  • FA age appropriate Coaching Introductory Module
  • Coaching Disabled Performers work shop
  • Full First Aid Certificate
  • Hold a full enhanced CRB check

Coaching Experience:
3 years with the Lancashire football Association working mainly in schools and on holiday programmes. 2 years with InsideOut Soccer Schools as a senior coach working again in local schools, on holiday programmes and developing young talent in the Barrow and district area. Currently Barrow AFC Community development officer, check our website out to see the work we provide. I have worked in America for 4 months in 2008 where I developed my skills further as a coach and also experienced different cultures and ways of life. This was a very positive experience for me, seeing a different approach to coaching football or 'soccer' as it is known in the U.S.

The Future:
To step up the coaching ladder and develop my skills as much as I can. The next step for me is to begin module one in the FA's new age appropriate coaching programme. Long term I would love to complete my level 3 (uefa b) badge.

To continue to build the Community Initiative at the club, linking the club with more local schools, other community groups and reaching out into the south lakes area. Barrow AFC is a fantastic club and I'm hopeful of one day being the community officer here when we are a football league club.
