Born in Bishop Auckland, Andrew joined Carlisle United as a scholar and was awarded a full contract in January 2009. He spent the latter part of the 2008/09 season on loan to Workington in the Blue Square North and also had a spell with them on loan at the start of the last campaign.
Andy joined Barrow on loan in early October 2009, initially for a month. He made his debut as a substitute in the home win against Ebbsfleet United and scored within a minute of coming on. After scoring five goals in five games he returned to Carlisle United in early November but returned to the club on a further loan deal within days. However he broke his foot against AFC Wimbledon almost immediately after rejoining the club and had to return to Carlisle United. He returned to Barrow on loan in August 2010. He returned to Brunton Park in October. He was released by Carlisle United in January 2011 and signed for Barrow on a permanent basis.
