Skelton started his career at Carlisle United as a trainee but after three years at Brunton Park he moved to Workington in 1997.
After a year at Borough Park, he joined Gretna, then in the UniBond League, but who were elected to the Scottish League the following season.
After their rapid rise through the Scottish Leagues to the SPL, Gretna went out of business in 2008 and Skelton was one of the remaining 40 staff members who were released. Two days earlier, Skelton had scored the winning goal on his side's final SPL fixture against Hearts.
In June 2008 Skelton signed for SPL side Kilmarnock but left the club under freedom of contract in June 2010 signing for Hamilton.
Skelton made 200 appearances for Gretna and a combined 63 SPL appearances for Kilmarnock and Hamilton.
