David joined Rochdale as a trainee and progressed through the ranks making his first Football League appearance in the 1994-95 season. He went on to make 186 League appearances for the Spotland side, scoring nine times before joining Luton Town during the 2001-02 season.


He spent four seasons at Kenilworth Road making 37 league appearances without scoring and also had a nine game spell on loan to Chester City before being released in the summer of 2005. He spent the 2005-06 season with Wrexham in League Two making 22 League appearances and he also had a four game loan spell back at his first club Rochdale.


In the summer of 2006 he joined Lancaster City but left the Giant Axe at the start of November to join Barrow, making his debut in the home win over Leigh RMI.


He became part of the caretaker management team in November 2007 and was appointed as permanent joint manager with Darren Sheridan a month later. He was the joint winner of the Blue Square North "Manager of the Month" award in March 2008 and in 2009/10 the pair led the Bluebirds to Wembley Victory in the FA Trohpy.
