Manager Ian Evatt’s thoughts after defeat in the capital.
Bluebirds boss Ian Evatt was left frustrated by his side’s lack of a cutting edge as we fell to defeat against Barnet, despite a late fightback at the Hive:
“Anyone can play when you’re 3-0 down, it’s easy to step up to the plate then with nothing to lose, it has to be from minute one. It isn’t acceptable. We have more or less dominated for 90 minutes, I think they’ve been in our box three times and scored three goals.
We’ve missed chances and our decision making in the final third wasn’t good. We’ve been working on it constantly and I see it in training every day which is why I’m frustrated because they cut each other into ribbons through the week.
I’m just so frustrated because I see what they can do on the training ground everyday, Barnet are a good team but we have come here and pretty much passed them off the pitch but been beaten 3-1, it’s not good enough.”
The Bluebirds usually solid defence was caught out with an early goal from the home side, but Evatt was reluctant to criticize his defence after their incredible record in the last fourteen games:
“We didn’t defend well enough today, the three goals were sloppy and were poor goals to concede. It’s hard for me to have a go at them when they’ve kept eleven clean sheets in fourteen games, today is so unlike us. But sometimes when the defenders are having a bad time the strikers need to step up to the plate and bail them out and they’ve not done that today.
It isn’t for the lack of creating chances, we are doing that, it’s just our decision making and that last decision which has been poor. Barnet pretty much sat eleven men behind the ball for the entire game and we have to be more ruthless and more clinical. We have to find ways and means to keep scoring and put chances away.”
The Bluebirds were missing two experienced heads through suspension, but the return of Rhys Turner was a positive sign for the gaffer:
“We lacked a few experience heads 100 percent, we missed Sam and Jason talking to the younger ones and controlling the game because our decision making in both boxes was poor.
Rhys’ was a huge positive. He is a seriously good footballer but we just haven’t had him right all season. We have to look after him so he doesn’t break down again but I think he has shown in the half an hour he was on today what he can do.”
As we head into the final stretch of the season Evatt challenged his players to step up and show what they can do as he starts to look towards next season, and the manager believes his side should be doing better:
“I think we should be doing better with the team we’ve got. We’ve beaten plenty of the teams in the top six and we have come here today, as the away team, and more or less controlled the ball for 90 minutes. But we have to be more ruthless. We have kept eleven clean sheets in fourteen games and our defence has been solid, it wasn’t today but we have to start putting teams to the sword.
There is a big summer coming up and this club is going places. We have a solid foundation and base in place, we have an excellent new board and this club is going to be one where you want to be at so these players are playing for their futures and they have got to start doing it on a consistent basis.”
The Bluebirds Trust announced they had hit their £50,000 fundraising target to obtain a 10% share in the club, and the Bluebirds boss is delighted for them:
“I’m delighted for the supporters trust because they deserve it. They’re a great group and have backed me and obviously they’re on board now and we can make decisions together moving forward for the best of Barrow. I’m telling you this club is going places and will be the place to be, whether it is this season or next season we will be pushing to be in the football league very soon.”
