Papa John’s Trophy

In Opposition
Accrington Stanley returned to action in the FA Cup at the weekend after an enforced break due to an outbreak of coronavirus within their squad.

When 17 players and two staff were tested positive for the virus, Stanley closed down completely for 14 days before making their return in a 2-1 cup defeat at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

The stoppage to their season was a frustrating one for John Coleman’s men, who had made an encouraging start to the League One campaign.

The Lancashire outfit have won four of their first seven league outings during 2020/21 to lie 14th in the table despite having played fewer games than anyone in the division.

They have also done well in the Papa John’s Trophy and top the group with five points ahead of tonight’s game, which means they need only a draw to confirm their qualification for the next stage.

Head To Head
Tonight’s game will be the latest in a long rivalry between the two clubs which stretches back as far as 1921 – though it will be the first competitive meeting in almost 20 years.

It was back in 2002/03 when the sides last shared a division – and that year Stanley romped away with the Unibond Northern Premier League Division title, as Barrow finished as runners-up.

That year it was Accrington who took the points on home soil in September 2002 with a 2-1 win, but a Mark Hume goal ensured The Bluebirds took revenge with a 1-0 triumph when they visited Holker Street in the November.

Referee
James Bell is the man in charge for this evening’s Papa John’s Trophy meeting against Accrington Stanley at The Progression Solicitors Stadium.

The official stepped up on to the EFL’s list of referees for the start of the new campaign and has so far overseen nine games and already dished out five red cards.

Bell presided over one Barrow game last season when he saw us enjoy a 2-0 win over Bromley on home soil back in January.

Competition Rules
This is the final game of the Papa John’s Trophy group stage and the winners of the game will be awarded three points.

If the game is level at 90 minutes then both sides will be awarded a point. However, a penalty shootout will then follow and the winners of that will be given an extra point.

Betting
Accrington Stanley are 13/10 favourites to pick up three points this evening, with Barrow rated a 17/10 shot for victory and a price of 85/40 on the game ending all-square at 90 minutes.

Bluebirds Knocked Out Of Trophy

10 November 2020

Barrow were knocked out of the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday evening following a 1-0 defeat to Accrington Stanley at The Progression Solicitors Stadium.

The Bluebirds were behind from the early stages when Lewis Mansell diverted home from close range and the visitors then defended with real determination to protect their lead.

Scott Quigley, back in the side after injury, got through 70 minutes unscathed but missed from the penalty spot as David Dunn’s men were left frustrated by their League One opponents.

The Barrow boss made nine changes to his starting line-up from that which started at Grimsby Town last time out as Kgose Ntlhe also got time on the pitch after a spell in the treatment room.

After a scrappy start to proceedings, it was Stanley who grabbed an early advantage when a ball was sent in from the right to Mansell who got enough on the ball to send it home from close range for a debut goal.

The Bluebirds had a glorious chance to level things up on 10 minutes when a superb driving run from Jayden Reid was halted by a foul in the area and the referee awarded a penalty – only for Scott Quigley’s spot-kick to be saved by Stanley keeper Nathan Baxter.

Quigley was denied once more by Baxter shortly afterwards when he did brilliantly to spin away from his marker but this time his low drive was well held by the keeper.

Reid was proving a handful with his pace, strength and direct running but he also showed some brilliant footwork to create a chance for himself just before the break. He cleverly nutmegged his man with a first touch before his fierce left-footed drive was well saved by Baxter.

Josh Lillis had to be alert in the early stage of the second half when Stanley sub Dion Charles cut inside from the right and struck a low drive but the Bluebirds keeper got down well to block the effort.

There were yellow cards for Chris Taylor and Jayden Reid as things began to get a little feisty on the hour, while the visitors felt aggrieved after having a Ryan Cassidy goal flagged offside.

Barrow continued to press but the game was becoming more and more scrappy as it went on and good chances remained at a premium.

Chris Taylor had an opportunity to rescue a draw right at the death but clipped his free-kick just over the bar and that was enough to end Barrow’s interest in the Papa John’s Trophy for the season.
