Preview: AFC Wimbledon v Barrow

26 August 2022

Take a look at everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two clash against AFC Wimbledon.

AFC Wimbledon v Barrow
Saturday 27th August 2022
Plough Lane
Sky Bet League Two

In Opposition
AFC Wimbledon are under new management this season. Former Charlton Athletic boss Johnnie Jackson is at the Dons' helm, after signing a two-year deal in the summer. Joining Jackson in the dugout is his former Addicks coach, Terry Skiverton.

The Wombles have had a solid start to life under their new manager, with a W2 D2 L1 record and a 10th position to show for their efforts so far in League Two.

The Venue
AFC Wimbledon completed an emotional move ‘home’ to Plough Lane (The Cherry Red Records Stadium for sponsorship purposes) in November 2020.

The original Wimbledon had played their matches at the original Plough Lane for much of the 20th century and their new stadium lies just 200 yards east of their former home.

Plough Lane has a capacity of 9,215 and is shared with professional Rugby League club, London Broncos who are tenants of AFC Wimbledon.

Head To Head
The clubs met as recently as November 2020 when AFC Wimbledon needed penalties to get past The Bluebirds in a First Round FA Cup after a goalless draw in Cumbria.

In total, there have been five previous encounters and the last time the two teams shared a division was in the 2010/11 Blue Square Premier when both games finished 2-0 in favour of the home side.

Referee
John Busby will be the man with the whistle at The Cherry Red Records stadium on Saturday.

So far this season, he has refereed two Sky Bet Championship fixtures and two League One fixtures. He has shown 18 yellow cards in 6 games.

He last refereed Barrow in the 1-1 away draw at Colchester United in April 2021.

Tickets
Barrow fans will be able to collect pre-ordered tickets at Plough Lane, and purchase tickets on the day also.

Full ticketing information for the fixture can be found here.

Live Streaming
We are not allowed to live stream games in the UK between the hours of 2.45pm and 5.15pm on a Saturday, so this weekend’s game will not be available to domestic supporters.

Barrow fans outside of the UK will be able to access a live stream via iFollow and you can purchase the match in the usual way ahead of kick-off.

Live Commentary
We will be providing live online audio commentary from every game this season as we continue our link-up with BBC Radio Cumbria.

Match Report: AFC Wimbledon 0-1 Barrow

28 August 2022

Barrow continued their fantastic start to life under Pete Wild and Adam Temple, with a well fought 1-0 victory at Plough Lane against AFC Wimbledon.

It only took 10 minutes for The Bluebirds to find the decisive goal in this one, when a great bit of football saw Ben Whitfield run on to Patrick Brough’s well placed pass, and deliver a whipped ball for Josh Gordon to cleverly tap into the back of the net.

AFC Wimbledon generated almost a carbon-copy chance in the 23rd minute, but nobody could get a toe on a whizzed ball across the box.

Barrow continued their bright first half, when League Two assists leader Ben Whitfield danced around The Dons’ defence and curled an effort narrowly wide of the post just before the half time break.

Josh Gordon almost grabbed himself a brace in the 55th minute, as a fantastic ball into the box by Ben Whitfield saw ‘Flash’ glance a header that had Wimbledon goalkeeper Nik Tzanev beat, but floated narrowly over the bar.

The Wombles’ faithful thought their side had grabbed an equaliser on 65 minutes, but the officials quickly spotted that Ayoud Assal required assistance from his hand to get the ball under control, and awarded a free kick to Barrow.

Pete Wild described this game as a “classic away from home performance” and Barrow demonstrated that with some solid defending in the closing minutes; with Sam McClelland and substitute George Ray just doing enough to put off Wimbledon’s Assal from levelling the scoreline in the dying seconds.

Wild, who’s only negative result in the Barrow hotseat was a controversial 1-0 defeat at Sutton United a fortnight ago, now has led The Bluebirds to 5 wins from the opening 6 Sky Bet League Two games.

Barrow move up to 2nd place in the League Two table with the victory and shift the focus to next Saturday's trip to Northampton Town (kick-off 3pm).
