Preview: Fleetwood Town v Barrow

30 August 2022

Take a look at everything you need to know ahead of Barrow’s Papa John’s Trophy fixture against Fleetwood Town.

Fleetwood Town v Barrow
Tuesday 30th August 2022, kick-off 7pm.
Highbury Stadium
Papa John’s Trophy Group Stage

In Opposition
Fleetwood Town are another team with a new face in the dugout this season. Former Celtic captain Scott Brown is the man at the Highbury helm, as the former midfielder was given the managerial reins earlier this summer.

The former Celtic captain brought numerous new faces to Highbury Stadium in the offseason, including experienced midfielder Josh Vela and 6ft 4in defender Josh Earl. Exciting young striker Callum Morton returned to Fleetwood on a three-year deal, too.

Like Barrow did last Tuesday, Fleetwood enjoyed a 2-2 draw at Lincoln City at the weekend. Town netted a late injury time equaliser to bring a point back up to Lancashire.

Head To Head
The last meeting between the two sides was in last year’s Papa John’s Trophy, when The Cod Army ran out as 3-1 victors. Bluebirds fans may remember Scott Moloney making his outfield debut in that game.

Perhaps the most memorable meeting came in August 2011, when Barrow beat Fleetwood at Holker Street 4-0 in the Blue Square Bet Premier. As a direct response to that hammering, Fleetwood went out and bought Jamie Vardy from FC Halifax Town… and the rest, as they say, is history.

Fleetwood got their revenge in the return fixture, though, as Vardy himself netted a brace in a 4-1 defeat for The Bluebirds.

Referee
Thomas Kirk will be the man with the whistle at Highbury Stadium.

So far this season, he has refereed four Sky Bet League Two fixtures and a Carabao Cup clash between Harrogate Town and Stockport County.

As far as our records show, he has never officiated a fixture involving Barrow or Fleetwood Town.

Match Reports

Match Report: Fleetwood Town 1-1 Barrow (3-4 On Pens)

30 August 2022

Barrow continued their great early season form with a shootout win over Scott Brown’s Fleetwood Town on Tuesday evening, with Josh Lillis providing the goalkeeping heroics to help The Bluebirds prevail on penalties.

A neat pass from Carlos Mendes Gomes allowed Brendan Wiredu to whip a nice effort into the top left and put The Cod Army ahead on the half hour mark.

Tom White was pulled down on the edge of the box by Fleetwood defender Carl Johnston in the 43rd minute; Johnston was shown a yellow card for the offence.

John Rooney stepped up and did what John Rooney does best, and neatly curled the 20 yard free kick into the top right corner to make it 1-1 and send The Bluebirds into half time on level terms.

Neither side could find a winner in the second half. Barrow perhaps came the closest when David Moyo’s flicked header had Fleetwood goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk beat, but narrowly looped over the bar in the 58th minute.

Pete Wild’s side almost found a winner in the closing stages; Moyo’s goalbound shot was blocked, and Pavel Zak’s rebound almost deflected into the bottom left corner.

Neither Fleetwood Town or Barrow could find that winning goal, and a penalty shootout was needed to settle the score.

Barrow goalkeeper Josh Lillis made two vital saves in the shootout; the second of which was the save that denied Fleetwood’s Sam Glenfield and sent 208 travelling Bluebirds fans back up the A6 with a smile.
