Preview: Barrow v Swindon Town

Find out all you need to know ahead of tomorrow's Sky Bet League Two matchup against Swindon Town at the SO Legal Stadium.

Opposition
Formed in 1879 by Reverend William Pitt of Liddington, the team turned professional in 1894 and joined the Southern League which was founded in the same year. Swindon would make their first FA Cup semi-final in 1910 where they were defeated by Newcastle United who went on to win the tournament.

In 1969 Swindon beat Arsenal 3-1 to win the League Cup for the first and only time in the club’s history, Goals from Roger Smart and Dan Rogers sealed the victory, which stands as Town’s greatest achievement. In 2006, following relegation to League Two, they became the first-ever former Premiership side to be demoted to the lowest division in the Football League system.

Scott Lindsey’s side comes to SO Legal Stadium sitting 8th in Sky Bet League Two only two points behind the Bluebirds. Swindon hosted Wimbledon last Saturday in a goalless draw with opportunities being hit and miss for both sides, Swindon dominated possession however only managed one shot on target in the fixture in a missed opportunity to move into playoff positions with many games being called off for adverse weather conditions.

Head To Head
The two sides have met each other 6 times in competitive fixtures dating back to 1967, in which Barrow has won 2, drawn 1, and lost 3. The first competitive game between the sides came in Division Three, 1967, where the two sides saw out a 1-1 draw at Holker Street. The last outing between these sides came in a 2-1 Sky Bet League Two defeat, in April 2022.

Referee
The man with the whistle at the SO Legal Stadium this afternoon will be Robert Lewis. He’ll be assisted by Daniel Woodward and Blake Antrobus, Peter Gooch has been assigned to Fourth Official duties for Saturday’s fixture.

Lewis was in charge of the previous fixture between the sides in April 2022. Where Barrow would be defeated by Swindon courtesy of a late Reed goal at the County Ground shortly after Platt had equalised for The Bluebirds.

Lewis’s last outing came on Tuesday night, where a dominant 4-0 display from Cheltenham Town gave them progression past Chelsea U21 into the quarter-finals of the Papa John’s Trophy.
