Newport County were originally founded in 1912, due to some football-fanatic steelworkers who’d migrated from Birmingham and weren’t interested in the sport of choice, Rugby at the time. Taking the amber colours due to the almost entirely of the club made up of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans. However, fast-forwarding 77 years the club found itself bankrupt and falling out of existence. A new club was formed three months later in May 1989 under Newport AFC, which would be changed 10 years later to Newport County AFC, with links back to the original side.

Perhaps one of the most talked about sporting events within Newport was the remarkable European Cup Winners Cup quarter-final against Carl Zeiss Jena in March 1981, a game County lost 3-2 on aggregate.

Newport County gained promotion to the Football League in 2012/13, defeating Wrexham in the final 2-0.

Four seasons later, they pulled off a great escape to keep themselves in League Two, after being 11 points adrift with 12 games to go, they secured their League status against Notts County on the final game of the season.

The Exiles have seen some shocks in the FA Cup as well, including dumping Leicester City out in 2019, thanks to an 85th minute winner from Padraig Armond, with Newport having taken the lead early in the first half.

The Exiles make the long trip up to Barrow-in-Furness fresh off a 2-1 win over Swindon Town in Wales last weekend. County saw off ten-man Swindon thanks to goals from Cameron Norman and Calum Kavanagh. They sit in 19th place, just 4 points above the drop zone.

Head To Head
A brace from Josh Gordon at Rodney Parade earlier on in the Sky Bet League Two campaign saw The Bluebirds to victory in South Wales. Gordon opened the scoring in the 45th minute, before doubling the lead just 15 minutes into the second half.

Barrow come into this afternoon after a 1-1 draw at Colchester United on the road last Saturday. Pete Wild's side led for a large chunk of the second half before a goal deep into injury time forced The Bluebirds to settle for a point.

Referee
The man in the middle at the SO Legal Stadium will be the familiar face of Seb Stockbridge, who has officiated The Bluebirds several times over the years. 

He’ll be accompanied by linesmen Daniel Woodward and Mark Cunliffe, and Matthew Sowerby will be taking up Fourth Official duties for the fixture.

Durham-based Stockbridge last refereed Barrow in the 2-0 Papa John’s Trophy victory over Carlisle United in October. Last season, he oversaw The Bluebirds’ 4-0 hammering of Forest Green Rovers and the New Year’s Day defeat against Bradford City.

He also refereed the pre-season fixture between Barrow and Fleetwood Town, when he controversially dished out a red card to Josh Gordon.

Perhaps most memorably, Mr Stockbridge was the man in the middle for Barrow’s 1-1 draw with Ebbsfleet United in 2013, when a large spillage of baked beans on the M6 delayed kick-off. Bluebirds fans may also recall the FA Trophy Quarter Final away at Gainsborough Trinity earlier that campaign, when Barrow were forced to wear Gainsborough's away kit, due to Stockbridge deeming that Barrow's sky blue shirts clashed with the home side's dark blue strip.

The Cross Bar will be serving drinks pre and post match, with Happy Hours from 5pm - 7pm. We'll also have local singer Hayden Barlow performing an acoustic set in the Cross Bar from 5:30pm.

Live Streaming
We are not allowed to live stream games in the UK between the hours of 2.45pm and 5.15pm on a Saturday, so this weekend’s game will not be available to domestic supporters.

Barrow fans outside of the UK will be able to access a live stream via iFollow and you can purchase the match in the usual way ahead of kick-off.
