Preview: Colchester United v Barrow

3 February 2023

Here's all the information you need, as the attention shifts to Saturday's Sky Bet League Two trip to Colchester United.

Colchester United vs Barrow
Saturday 4th February, kick-off 3pm
JobServe Community Stadium
Sky Bet League Two

Opposition
Association football in Colchester dates back to the mid 1800s, when Colchester Town were the team of choice. Town folded in 1937 upon the founding of Colchester United.

They started life in the Southern League, and after being elected to the Football League in 1950, the Club saw 40 years of League football, before being relegated to non-league in 1990.

However, it was a short lived exile, as the U's won the Conference title just two years later to ensure a quick return to the Football League. They achieved promotion to the third tier of English Football in 1998, following a Play-Off Final victory over Torquay United.

The U's have been as high as the Championship, with the Essex side earning a spot in the second tier after finishing 2nd in League One in 2005/06 under the management of now-Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson. They were promoted along with their county rivals, Southend United.

In recent years, Colchester have been League Two regulars, and even reached the Play-Offs in 2019/20, finishing 6th after PPG.

Head To Head
The meeting between the sides at the SO Legal Stadium earlier this season saw Billy Waters bag a trio of goals in a 3-1 victory for The Bluebirds. Waters earned himself into the EFL and FIFA 23 Teams of the Week, and boosted Barrow up to 4th in the Sky Bet League Two standings.

Saturday sees Pete Wild's side make their third visit to The JobServe Community Stadium.

In 2020/21, on Easter Monday, Barrow earned a point from a 1-1 draw with a late goal from Tom Beadling – his first for the Club. Earlier in that campaign, The U’s won a Friday night game 3-2 at Holker Street.

Prior to that season, the sides had met five times at Layer Road in the Football League - once in Division Three and four times in Division Four.

Last year, The Bluebirds picked up three valuable points on the road as a dominant second half performance was enough to see off Colchester United at The JobServe Community Stadium.

Referee
Officiating Saturday's meeting will be Benjamin Speedie. Alan Cresswell and Stuart Butler will be donned with flags, with Fourth Official duties assigned to Daniel Bonneywell.

Speedie has refereed The Bluebirds once this campaign; the penalty shootout victory over Blackpool in the Carabao Cup.
