Preview: Barrow v Northampton Town

27 January 2023

Read up on all the information you need, ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet League Two encounter against Northampton Town at the SO Legal Stadium.

Barrow vs Northampton Town
Saturday 28th January, kick-off 3pm
SO Legal Stadium
Sky Bet League Two

Opposition
Founded in 1897, Northampton Town caught their nickname (The Cobblers) from the historic shoe making industry in the town. They share rivalries with both Peterborough United and MK Dons, with both teams finding themselves in League One, something the high-flying Cobblers themselves are striving for next season.

They have found themselves in the Football League system for the majority of their existence and in more recent years bouncing between League One and Two, with a League Two title win back in 2015/16, they have found themselves back in League Two following relegation from their most recent stint in the third tier which only lasted a season in 2020/21.

Some of you might know of the name Scott Pollock who was brought into the club on the back of then YouTube football club Hashtag United, whom he featured on their Hashtag Academy series in 2017, staring at Wembley.

Jon Brady’s side currently find themselves in occupying the final automatic promotion spot, however, are looking to bounce back at SO Legal stadium after suffering back-to-back defeats from Greater Manchester outfits Stockport County and Salford City, although have overcome promotion rivals Leyton Orient early in the month with a 1-0 victory at Sixfields.

Head To Head
The Cobblers overcame The Bluebirds early in the season with a 3-1 victory at Sixfields, added to this a 3-0 victory at the Holker Street in the final game of the previous campaign. Although winning on that day, it ended up feeling like a defeat for some Cobblers fans, with Bristol Rovers pulling off a shock 7-0 win to overcome the goal difference deficit to send The Gas back up to League One.

Bluebirds fans can cast their minds back to February 2022 which saw Aaron Amadi-Holloway score the only goal of the game in the 51st minute at Sixfields to shock the Cobblers and end a then 3-game winless run.

Referee
The man in the middle at the SO Legal Stadium will be Darren Drysdale. The Royal Air Force Sergeant will be assisted by Darren Williams and Graeme Fyvie. Darren Handley will take up Fourth Official duties for the fixture.

Mr Drysdale hasn’t officiated Barrow this season, but he did oversee last season’s 3-2 home victory over Hartlepool United.
