In 2002, The FA gave permission for Wimbledon to be airlifted and placed in Milton Keynes 70 miles north, much to the disgruntlement of Wombles and football fans around the country. This decision prompted supporters to boycott the rebranded club and form their own club: AFC Wimbledon.

The entire history of Wimbledon was granted to remain the rights of the reformed football club, which they were originally formed in 1889 on Wimbledon Common before their move to Plough Lane in 1912.

The reformed club began with a ground share with Kingstonian before being granted permission for a rebuilt stadium at Plough Lane, built it would take until August 2021 for the fans to enter the new stadium due to the Covid pandemic.

The club saw success in 1988 with a famous FA Cup win over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium and was also one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992.

AFC Wimbledon currently find themselves in 16th place in League Two, and last time out were defeated at Plough Lane to Crawley Town. Ashley Nadesan's 6th minute strike was enough to claim all 3pts for the away side.

Head To Head
This will be only the third meeting with AFC Wimbledon at Holker Street.

Of course, they visited us two seasons ago in the FA Cup First Round in a game which takes us back to the dark days of Covid and the lockdowns.

At that stage, AFC Wimbledon were in League One. The game should have been played in early November but was postponed due to Covid issues and was eventually played on a Thursday night late in the month.

We had lost 4-3 at home to Oldham Athletic just forty eight hours earlier. Manager David Dunn fielded a completely different starting eleven, but those who might have watched the stream of the game were treated to one hundred and twenty minutes of football without a goal and hardly a chance created.

AFC Wimbledon won 4-2 on penalties and seventy two hours later they lost 2-1 at home to Crawley Town in Round Two.

Earlier this season in our first ever trip to the impressive 'new' Plough Lane we won, thanks to Josh Gordon’s early strike.

With nine home wins in League Two this season to date, we go into Saturdays game looking to make it ten home Football League wins in a season for the first time since the 1968-69 season in Division Three (now League One).

Referee
The man with the whistle at the SO Legal Stadium will be Sam Allison. He’ll be assisted by Hristo Karaivanov and Daniel Woodward on the lines, with Andrew Kitchen taking up Fourth Official duties.

He’s Fireman Sam by day and an EFL referee by weekend. The 42-year-old enjoyed a successful playing career, plying his trade at high level of the non-league pyramid embarking on a dual career as both a match official and a firefighter.

You have to travel back to April 2019 to find the last time Allison oversaw a Barrow game. He was in charge for the 0-0 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge at Victoria Road at the end The Bluebirds’ penultimate season in the National League.
