Preview: Barrow v Sutton United

10 March 2023

Check out all you need to know, as Sutton United are the visitors to the SO Legal Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Barrow vs Sutton United
Saturday 11th March, kick-off 3pm
SO Legal Stadium
Sky Bet League Two

Opposition
Sutton United were founded in 1898 when two local clubs Sutton Guild Rovers and Sutton Association joined forces. The colours of were retained from the latter, which they fielded in their first game against Norwood and Selhurst. Sutton United’s first senior honour came in the Herald Junior Cup in 1902.

After being amateur for their entire existence with many trophy successes up to 1970, they reached national fame as they drew Leeds United in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Leeds would go on to win 6-0 in front of a record 14,000 attendees.

In more recent times, The Us gained promotion to the National League in 2016.

In their first season back in the top flight of non-league, Sutton finished 12th, but it was their success in the FA Cup that the season would be remembered for.

The Us reached the Fifth Round and overcame Leeds United 1-0, achieving revenge for their defeat 47 years earlier. They would, unfortunately, be put out of the competition by Arsenal after a valiant display in a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

Sutton United were champions of the Vanarama National League in 2021 and enjoyed a successful debut season in the Football League last term. The Us reached the Papa John’s Trophy Final at Wembley (a first visit to Wembley since 1981) and narrowly missed out on the League Two playoffs; finishing their inaugural EFL campaign in 8th place.

Sutton currently sit a place above Barrow in 9th, as both sides keep an eye on the playoff places with 11 games to go. On Tuesday evening, Sutton defeated Crawley town 3-0 with Omar Bugiel scoring on either side of the interval, and Angol completed the scoring in the final few moments to ensure the three points.

Head To Head
Barrow’s first competitive meeting with Sutton United came on 7th October 1989, when Ray Wilkie’s Bluebirds prevailed 1-0 at Holker Street. Following Sutton’s relegation in 1991, the two sides didn’t meet again until 2016, after the Gander Green Lane outfit won promotion from the National League South.

Barrow’s last encounter against The Amber & Chocolates at Holker Street came in April of last year, when a 1-0 victory (and a Paul Farman penalty save) secured The Bluebirds’ League Two status.

In the reverse fixture this campaign, Bluebirds were edged out by Sutton 1-0 at the VBS Community Stadium. Barrow netted an equaliser in injury time, following an indirect free-kick, which Sutton goalkeeper Brad House clearly touched on the way into the net. However, in controversial fashion, the goal was ruled out and Barrow were condemned to defeat.

Referee
This afternoon, the man with the whistle and notebook at the SO Legal Stadium will be Oliver Langford. Hell be accompanied by Jonothan Hunt and Matthew Smith with the flags, and Darren Handley will be between the dugouts as Fourth Official.

Langford’s previous game saw him take charge of a goalless draw between Morecambe and Bolton last weekend. This won’t be Langford’s first time at SO Legal Stadium, he was in charge when Barrow encountered Scunthorpe United in the Carabao Cup in 2021, a game which saw The Bluebirds win by a goal to nil after a stunning second-half goal by Dimitri Sea sent Barrow through to Round Two to face Aston Villa.
