Barrow Earn Friendly Win At Southport

30 August 2020

Matty Platt and Scott Quigley both found the net as Barrow ran out winners at Southport in their latest pre-season friendly on Saturday.

The goals came at the beginning and end of the first half, during an encounter in which Harrison Biggins made his debut after joining on a season-long loan from Fleetwood Town on Friday.

After a fairly even first quarter-hour, Barrow showed the first signs of finding a breakthrough when they struck the wall with a free-kick before Platt saw a header from a corner blocked on the line.

Great work from Lewis Hardcastle then opened things up for Luke James to shoot on goal but he fired his effort just wide of the target.

However, the hosts showed their threat just after the half-hour mark when a free-kick from distance beought a wonderful fingertip save from Bluebirds keeper Joel Dixon.

The deadlock was broken five minutes after the restart when Harcastle curled a teasing free-kick in to the far post where Platt sent a header back across goal and in to the bottom corner of the net.

A Southport wall again stood up well to another Barrow free-kick as David Dunn’s men pressed for a second goal, while Dixon had to be alert to tip a low drive round the post at the other end.

More creative play from Hardcastle saw Jack Hindle get a chance on goal which went just wide before Dixon was once again called in to action to deal well with a 25-yard free-kick.

Biggins then showed a glimpse of his talent when he slipped a lovely ball through for fellow substitute Quigley and he made no mistake to put Barrow 2-0 up right on 90 minutes.
