Accrington Stanley returned to action in the FA Cup at the weekend after an enforced break due to an outbreak of coronavirus within their squad.
When 17 players and two staff were tested positive for the virus, Stanley closed down completely for 14 days before making their return in a 2-1 cup defeat at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
The stoppage to their season was a frustrating one for John Coleman’s men, who had made an encouraging start to the League One campaign.
The Lancashire outfit have won four of their first seven league outings during 2020/21 to lie 14th in the table despite having played fewer games than anyone in the division.
They have also done well in the Papa John’s Trophy and top the group with five points ahead of tonight’s game, which means they need only a draw to confirm their qualification for the next stage.
Head To Head
Tonight’s game will be the latest in a long rivalry between the two clubs which stretches back as far as 1921 – though it will be the first competitive meeting in almost 20 years.
It was back in 2002/03 when the sides last shared a division – and that year Stanley romped away with the Unibond Northern Premier League Division title, as Barrow finished as runners-up.
That year it was Accrington who took the points on home soil in September 2002 with a 2-1 win, but a Mark Hume goal ensured The Bluebirds took revenge with a 1-0 triumph when they visited Holker Street in the November.
Referee
James Bell is the man in charge for this evening’s Papa John’s Trophy meeting against Accrington Stanley at The Progression Solicitors Stadium.
The official stepped up on to the EFL’s list of referees for the start of the new campaign and has so far overseen nine games and already dished out five red cards.
Bell presided over one Barrow game last season when he saw us enjoy a 2-0 win over Bromley on home soil back in January.
Competition Rules
This is the final game of the Papa John’s Trophy group stage and the winners of the game will be awarded three points.
If the game is level at 90 minutes then both sides will be awarded a point. However, a penalty shootout will then follow and the winners of that will be given an extra point.

Accrington Stanley are 13/10 favourites to pick up three points this evening, with Barrow rated a 17/10 shot for victory and a price of 85/40 on the game ending all-square at 90 minutes.
