Delighted For Players And Fans - Kelly

27 April 2021

Rob Kelly admitted his delight for the players and the fans after Barrow’s brilliant 2-0 win at Forest Green Rovers clinched the Club’s survival in League Two.

First half goals from Scott Quigley and Bobby Thomas earned The Bluebirds a crucial three points which secured their EFL status for 2021/22.

Caretaker boss Kelly admitted that there was huge relief that the job had been completed and said the responsibility to supporters and all those who had worked so hard to get Barrow back to the Football League after so long had weighed heavy at times in recent months.

However, he paid tribute to the squad and said that ensuring they stayed in the EFL could now provide them with a platform for even more exciting times ahead.

“It was a massive game for us, particularly on the back of a couple of disappointing results,” Kelly told iFollow.

“We added some cutting edge today, created a couple of chances in the first half and I am just delighted for everyone that we have managed to get over the line.

“You have to try and maintain some perspective with what is going on in the world but when you wait for 50 years there is a sense of responsibility so it can be, in a sporting index, quite overwhelming. I know how I felt about it.

“The players have shouldered the burden and got it done so I am really delighted for everybody. It’s been a unique season for everyone, but I am just delighted for the supporters and thrilled for the players who will remember this now.

“I’m also happy for the people at the Club who have worked so hard to get the Club back in the Football League and have really supported me since asking me to take it until the end of the season.

“People are aware of what we have managed to achieve and where we have come from after where we were post-Christmas and in January, but it’s been a united effort and I know the Club will be better for it next season.”

Kelly also revealed he had already planned how he would celebrate staying up.

“I will take my dog for a walk tomorrow – Brian will be going for a longer walk so he will be delighted!

“I am not going to lie, I will definitely have a few glasses of wine and maybe even a couple of pints if I can find somewhere that will serve me.”
