Preview: Barrow v Exeter City

9 February 2021

Barrow v Exeter City
Tuesday 9th February 2021, 7pm
The Progression Solicitors Stadium
Sky Bet League Two

In Opposition
Exeter City look likely to be among the candidates for promotion to League One after shrugging off the disappointment of being beaten by Northampton Town in last year’s Play-Off Final.

The Grecians have continued to battle for a return to the third tier for the first time since 2012 in the aftermath of long-serving boss Paul Tisdale’s departure and fans’ favourite Matt Taylor has done an excellent job in following in his footsteps.

City made a strong start to 2020/21 and, after struggling to maintain their rhythm during the Christmas period, they have shown signs of getting back to their best in recent weeks.

Taylor’s men arrive in Cumbria tonight having won three of their last five games, including a win over in-form Bradford City on Saturday which saw them move back within six points of top spot.

One To Watch
Ryan Bowman has hit double figures for The Grecians during 2020/21 after exploding in to form during November to help City to some crushing victories.

The former Carlisle United front man notched his 11th of the campaign during the weekend win over Bradford City and remains on course to eclipse the 15 goals he scored last term.

Bowman has been on the books at St James’ Park since January 2019 and if he can continue to find the net on a regular basis during the run-in, then few would back against City having a say right at the top of League Two.

Head To Head
Barrow have been made to wait a long time for their chance to put the record straight against Exeter City – because The Grecians ran out 7-1 winners when the sides last met back in 1972.

It proved to be The Bluebirds’ final game in the Football League for almost 50 years and was a painful way to bow out so it will be hoped they can put that right this evening.

It’s actually going to be the 19th competitive meeting between Barrow and Exeter and our last success came by virtue of a 2-1 triumph in Devon back in February 1967.

Referee
Ross Joyce will be the man in the middle for this evening’s meeting with Exeter City, making his first trip of the season to The Progression Solicitors Stadium.

The experienced official, who is now in to his sixth season on the EFL’s list of referees, was also due to take charge of our original home fixture against The Grecians.

He last oversaw a Barrow game back in 2012/13 when he was on the whistle for National League defeats to Gateshead and Nuneaton as well as our draw with Grimsby Town.

Betting
Exeter City have been installed as 6/5 favourites for three points this evening, while The Bluebirds are rated a 21/10 shot and draw is priced up at 23/10 with our friends at Sky Bet.
