Preview: Southport v Barrow

30 July 2021

The Bluebirds will play their final friendly of pre-season on Saturday when they make the trip to face Southport at Haig Avenue (3pm kick-off).

Mark Cooper’s men have enjoyed a productive warm-up campaign so far, taking part in a selection of games against varied opposition and spending a week training in Scotland.

Now the Barrow boss will utilise this weekend’s outing to finetune preparations for the big kick-off with our League Two opener at Stevenage now just a week away.

The Opposition
Southport were sitting 17th in the National League North table when the decision to cancel the 2020/21 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed in February.

Therefore, The Sandgrounders will be delighted to be closing in on their own return to competitive action which kicks-off on Saturday 14th August when they host Gloucester City.

Experienced manager Liam Watson is at the Haig Avenue helm currently having returned to the club in 2018 having previously been in charge there between 2008 and 2013.

Watson’s side enjoyed a positive result last time out when they overcame Marine 2-0 in their most recent friendly at Haig Avenue on Tuesday night.
