The Barrovian Index: Jamie Devitt

9 June 2021

Midfield man Jamie Devitt is next into the Barrovian Index hotseat this afternoon as he picks out 20 questions at random and then attempts to entertain us with his answers…

This feature was first published in our Matchday Programme, The Zigger, for the game against Southend United in May 2021.

1 What’s your biggest fear?
Rats. I can’t say I have really had any bad experiences with rats but I have watched enough I’m A Celebrity know they give me the creeps! I really don’t like them and even just seeing one on the television is enough to give me shivers straight away!

10 If you could play a role in any film you’ve seen which one would it be?
Ooh, good question. I will go for Denzel Washington in Man On Fire. What a film that is! That’s got to be one of the best films ever, hasn’t it?

21 Who is your favourite Friends character?
Friends is class, I love watching that. I would say Chandler is probably my favourite, he proper makes me laugh with some of the stuff he comes out with!

30 When were you last nervous?
Haha! Well, when we got a new video analyst called Lewis he had to do his initiation song in the team hotel before an away game and I got so nervous on his behalf! Haha! His knees were clapping together and everything, he looked terrified!

41 What’s your favourite meal?
You know when you’re on holiday and you go for a wander and find a nice little restaurant where you get steak and chips with a peppercorn sauce? You can’t beat that, can you?

51 Would you rather be too hot or too cold?
That’s a hard one that, to be fair. I would probably say too hot – when you’re on holiday and you’re really warm and then go for a dip in the pool every now and then is a good feeling!

60 What confuses you most about the opposite sex?
Haha, you might need a while here! What about when they say “I’m fine” – but it doesn’t actually mean they’re fine, it means the opposite? There’s a lot that is pretty confusing!

69 What’s been your favourite ever Christmas present?
Probably when I got the first PlayStation. Having said that, I still remember getting a Sega Mega Drive one year and that was class. But I loved playing Crash Bandicoot on my PlayStation so I will go with that.

80 VAR – yes or no?
No, I am against it. After the game these days it’s all about what’s happened with VAR. Years ago, we used to talk about goals and whether they should have been allowed or now, and it was part of the enjoyment in my opinion. Everyone just talks about VAR now. People are getting sent-off for nothing as well – a West Ham player got a red car for kicking the ball the other week, did you see that?!

90 How do you feel about putting pineapple on pizza?
It’s a no from me. I just don’t trust them. I am putting it out there – anyone who puts pineapple on pizza cannot be trusted. Definitely.

99 What would you give yourself as a rating out of 10?
Haha, I will have to get some help from the other lads on this. Three? Jason Taylor has just said I am a three – and I will take that, a million percent. I am pretty happy with that. You’ve got to remember that Josh Kay is probably a two and Connor Brown is a two and a half on a good day! Haha!

5 How you like to celebrate after a good win?
After a good win, I just love going home, getting a takeaway and a nice glass of wine with the missus. I really enjoy family time on a Saturday night and three points makes it even better.

15 What was the last book you read?
What was the first Harry Potter book? It was Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone, wasn’t it? And I read that when it first came out so that tells you how long ago it was! I am not a big reader, to be honest. I didn’t read the other Harry Potter books because they are so long – but my son is reading them now and loves them.

25 What would you sing on a karaoke?
Well, I wouldn’t really do it, to be honest. Actually, I did it once at my best mate’s little girl’s christening and I sang Flying Without Wings by Westlife. I can’t remember how it went but I do remember the standing ovation… Haha!

34 Have you ever collected anything?
I can’t say that I have ever properly collected anything, but I do have quite a few pairs of Predator football boots now. I didn’t mean to collect them, but I have about eight or nine pairs now, and Crouchy (the physio) always gets on to me about my Adidas boots!

45 If you weren’t a footballer what would you be?
Honestly, I don’t know. I never once considered any other career when I was growing up – I just always wanted to be a footballer. I am not sure what else I could have done so it’s lucky I have managed to make a career out of football so far!

56 What has been your best fancy dress costume?
That’s weird, I was only just looking at some photos of this earlier today! I have done a few different ones over the years at different Christmas dos. I have been Peter Pan, I dressed as a pink bunny once and I was He Man one year as well! They are the ones that stand out but there will be others too!

64 Who is the funniest member of the squad?
There are a few funny lads among the squad, to be fair. Josh Kay makes me laugh a lot for some reason – he’s more than a bit daft, isn’t he? But there are others who are funny too, it’s a pretty good group for that!

75 What was your favourite subject at school?
Well, I did quite enjoy maths when it was just about numbers and you were using addition, multiplication and division. But then they started adding X and Y and all that, and it was just too much for me! It’s stupid, isn’t it? I look at my little lad’s homework now – he’s only 8 and I can’t do his maths! I have to go on Google if he ever asks for any help! Haha!

86 What’s your cure for a hangover?
Well, my cure is to not drink! Haha! To be fair, since I have had kids, I don’t really drink anymore because my hangover used to linger for a day or more. The last time I had more than a couple of drinks was probably on my birthday last year. If I was going to have a drink, I would need to know that the kids were looked after the next day and people were on hand to just deliver food to me in bed! Haha!

95 What was the naughtiest thing you did as a child?
I was quite quiet when I was a child, to be fair. I think my mam and dad were proper strict so I always just to be kept in check. I did manage to get quite good at signing my mam and dad’s name so if I ever had a bad report in my school journal that needed signing by them I could do it instead of showing them! Haha! I had my mam’s signature down to a tee!
