Bluebird Spotlight: Geoff Payne

11 June 2021

We place another Barrow fan in the hotseat to find out more about how they began supporting the Club and what their best memories are.

Next up to take centre-stage today is Geoff Payne, who works in medical sales and has been following The Bluebirds for more than 50 years, attending home games with friends in the Holker End.

Who did we play in your first Barrow game and what are your memories of the day?
I don’t remember! It was after the Swansea FA Cup game and before the Wolves FA Cup game. I spent much of the Wolves game telling anyone who listened that I knew Jackie Keen, as he was a good friend of my Dad’s!

Which Barrow match that you’ve seen stands out more than most and why?
So many… recent and not. Barrow v Southampton FA Cup - we came so close to winning, there was a fantastic atmosphere. We all were living in the back of Holker Street that day!

Who has been your favourite all-time Barrow player and why?
George Smith. When he first arrived, he wasn’t particularly liked, as his passes appeared poor. But then everyone figured it out... he was passing into open spaces where his teammates were supposed to be!

Who is your favourite current Barrow player and why?
Bobby Thomas.

Who do you think has been the most underrated Barrow player during your time watching and why?
Kgosi Ntlhe.

Which has been your favourite Barrow goal that you’ve seen live and why?
Matt Henney in the Play-Off Final against Stalybridge Celtic.

What is the favourite away ground you have visited and why?
Sheffield Wednesday for the 1967/68 League Cup tie.

What are your hopes for Barrow in the 2021/22 season?
A solid team, consistent performances and a mid-table finish – hopefully 10-15 points more than the past season.
