The Barrovian Index: Scott Quigley

15 June 2021

We’re back with our index of ridiculous questions and this time it’s Scott Quigley’s turn to pick 20 of them at random and then do his best to entertain us with his answers. Let’s go…

This feature was first published in our Matchday Programme, The Zigger, for our game against Colchester United in September 2020.

1 What’s your biggest fear?
Oh, here we go! Do you know what, I am not particularly scared of anything you know? I know that sounds a bit wrong, but I can’t think of anything I could say for this, I genuinely can’t!

3 What has been your worst injury?
It was probably when I injured my hip flexor a few years ago, that wasn’t too good. I was quite lucky in that I was only out for around six to eight weeks with that, and I haven’t had anything more serious, touch wood. That was when I was playing for Port Vale, so it was in around 2018.

10 If you could play a role in any film you’ve seen which one would it be?
It has to be Gladiator doesn’t it? He’s just the boy, he’s the main man and it’s one of the biggest films ever made. He’s got some great lines in that too – “Are you not entertained?” Haha!

15 What was the last book you read?
It was Tyson Fury’s book, I have got it here actually – it was called Behind The Mask. It’s a brilliant read. It goes in to all the stuff about his mental health and how he confronted that battle. It’s good to relate to someone like him, especially a sportsman because it can be quite stressful.

18 What is your typical pre-match meal?
Porridge and toast. I have that before every game. I just want something light like that about three hours before the game because I usually eat something a bit more substantial at breakfast.

22 Which player has got the best car?
Probably me! Haha! To be fair, not many of the lads have got sporty cars or anything. There are a couple – Josh Kay’s isn’t bad, he’s got a Mercedes. I have got a BMW X4 at the minute; I like a big car, like a jeep. The bigger the better for me!

27 Are you good at any other sports?
I fancy myself as a bit of a pool and snooker player. I try to play as often as I can, and I am in a team that plays on a Thursday night but that’s been stopped because of COVID obviously. I have a highest break of around mid to late twenties if I am being honest – I could have blagged you there and said higher!

32 Has a film ever made you cry?
No, never. I am just not a crier. Honestly, I can’t think of the last thing that made me cry – it would have to be something really, really bad because I don’t cry, it’s weird.

33 Can you do any decent impressions?
Haha! I fancy myself doing the Geordie or Carlisle accent. I have a good North East kind of accent. I used to wind Tom White and Patrick Brough up by doing the “I was born in Carlisle but I was made in the Royal Navy” line! Haha!

40 What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind?
I would have to play it safe and go for Sport, I think. I reckon I would do okay – I watch an awful lot of sport, so I think I have a pretty good all-round knowledge of it.

49 If you owned a restaurant what type of food would it serve?
Well, I am a big fan of Chinese food so, being purely selfish about it, I think I would go down that line. I am pretty good in the kitchen myself so I could help out with that. I am always home before the missus so I am not bad with the cooking – I can knock up a decent spread!

51 Would you rather be too hot or too cold?
I would rather be too cold, I hate being boiling. There’s nothing more frustrating than being too warm in the night and not being able to get to sleep.

55 Table for five – who are your four dinner guests?
I would invite John Bishop first off, because he would make us all laugh on the table. I would invite Steven Gerrard because he’s my all-time favourite footballer. Jurgen Klopp could come along, he would be good company, wouldn’t he? And Tyson Fury, he fascinates me and I enjoyed his book so he would be there too!

60 What confuses you most about the opposite sex?
Haha! I think it’s the way that they always think we know what is wrong with them. And usually we have absolutely no idea, to be honest! How are we expected to know? We’ve not got a clue! Haha!

77 What is your drink of choice on a night out?
Do you know what, I do like a nice cold pint of Peroni. If I walk into a bar and they have that on sale then that’s usually what I would go for, I reckon.

79 If you could relive one day in your life which one would it be?
It would probably be the first time I ever went to watch Liverpool with my uncle. He took me to a game at Anfield when they were playing Leeds United in about 1999 or 2000.

85 If you had to hide a giraffe, where would you hide it?
Haha! What a question! I don’t really know. I guess I could hide it behind a tree? Like one of those big old Oak trees – yeah, that would do the job!

90 How do you feel about putting pineapple on pizza?
Not very good at all. I don’t rate that, no. Any fruit on a pizza is no good for me. Then again, you’re going to tell me tomato is a fruit now and ruin my argument, aren’t you? Haha!

94 Do you sing in the shower?
No, not at all. I would say the most I do in the shower is break into a hum. There’s no singing in there that I can recollect! Ha!

98 What’s the best wind-up you’ve been a part of?
Do you know what, there was a belter, but I am not sure I can say it in the Programme! Haha! One of the lads (who I won’t name) was on Tinder so a few of us made a female profile up and began chatting to him on there, arranging a meeting and everything. The best thing was he was getting really excited and the messages were getting funnier and funnier. Haha! That was a good one.
