The Barrovian Index: Tom Beadling

22 June 2021

Tom Beadling is next up in the Barrovian Index hotseat as we pepper him with a seemingly endless selection of increasingly ridiculous questions in the hope that the midfield star can entertain us with his answers.

This feature was first published in our Matchday Programme, The Zigger, for our game against Cambridge United in February.

16 What would you say has been the best day of your life so far?
Ooh, these are serious questions aren’t they? Haha! I would go for the day I scored at Celtic Park when I had all my family there to watch. That was a tremendous feeling really and one I won’t forget.

23 Do you think you would like to be a Manager one day?
That’s a good question. Possibly. I haven’t given it an awful lot of though, if I am being honest, but I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. I would like to stay in the game in some capacity when I am finished playing so we will see how things work out!

50 What three things would you take to a desert island?
My phone, that’s allowed isn’t it? Can I pick a girl? Yeah? Okay, then Margot Robbie can come with me then!! I wouldn’t need anything else after that, I would be perfectly happy with Margot and my phone! Haha!

70 If you could swap places with any person, living or dead, for a week who would it be?
Oh wow! I would go for Lebron James, I think. How great would it be to live in his shoes for a week? I am not that big a basketball fan, but I bet he has an amazing lifestyle. If I’m being honest, I was gonna say Justin Bieber but changed my mind at the last second! Haha!

42 What are your favourite sweets?
Haribo. I like the Starmix ones, they’re the best. I could eat those all day long!

80 VAR – yes or no?
Absolutely not. I think it just slows the game down too much and it’s disallowing goals all the times for the smallest of margins. I don’t even think it always gets the decisions right so, for me, I would rather the game just carried on the way it was. It’s not for me and I think the game loses something.

100 If you could be an animal for the day which one would it be?
Haha! I might have to go for a shark. I have got a thing for Great White Sharks, they’re just the Kings of the sea, aren’t they? You can just swim around doing whatever you want – the ocean is your playground!

52 Who was your first football hero?
Steven Gerrard or Kevin Phillips. I loved Gerrard for as long as I can remember; I just really enjoyed watching him play and he had everything. When you relied on someone to come up with a last-minute winner he was always there and his technique and everything was brilliant. But SuperKev at Sunderland was amazing when he was banging in the goals there. He’s definitely one of the first Sunderland players I really looked up to.

64 Who is the funniest member of the squad?
Josh Kay. He just never knows what is going on and you never know what he’s going to come out with next. He is just brilliant to have around the place – he’s not the brightest but you never know what to expect from him, he’s always there to raise everyone’s spirits.

13 Have you got any superstitions?
I don’t think so, but I do have a little bit of OCD if that counts? It’s just around certain things, like if I get tins of beans, they have to be facing a certain way in the cupboard. It's not all the time but then things will happen to trigger me! Say, if I am playing a board game like Jenga, all the pieces need to go in with a special pattern. I don’t know why really! Haha!

6 Which emoji do you use the most?
I am not sure! It’s probably just the laughing face one really. I don’t use them too much. I mean, I do use them, but not in an over top way! I am not addicted or anything! Haha!

17 Did you pass your driving test first time?
Yeah, first time both theory and practical. It was too easy, and I cruised through both. Haha! I think I got three minors on my practical test, so I think that’s pretty good.

25 What would you sing on a karaoke?
Oh, I am a big fan of karaoke, to be fair. My best one would be ‘September’ by Earth, Wind and Fire! I have sung that a few times on karaoke back in the day, though not that recently!

28 What are you really bad at?
Answering my phone. I am not the best at that. Sometimes it’s on silent so I will miss calls and messages but then other times I just can’t be bothered to answer it! Haha!

34 Have you ever collected anything?
I used to be really keen on collecting the football stickers for albums when I was at school. I completed a couple of those when I was about 9 or 10 as I remember but it was loads of fun taking your swaps in to school and exchanging them with your mates. That was brilliant!

58 If you could be any superhero which one would you be?
I would go for Spiderman, I think. No, hang on – can I change it? Batman. People don’t actually know who you are so you can become the superhero but then go back to living your normal life.

67 What is your cure for hiccups?
I don’t have one, I just crack on! I don’t let hiccups bother me really, I just get on with my life – I don’t think anything really can be done so I just wait for them to go away!

75 What was your favourite subject at school?
I really liked English, both English Language and English Literature. I enjoyed those lessons, and I did quite well in my GCSEs because I got two A’s so I was pretty pleased with that!

89 Who do people say you look like?
Haha, Patrick Brough!! We both get that one all the time. The lads were on it from the first day I turned up at training after I signed! If we ever go out we always get asked if we’re twins – sometimes we just go along with it! I mean, if it helps!! Haha!

97 What film do you know all the words to?
Stepbrothers. It’s a brilliant film, that. I couldn’t even tell you how many times I have watched that now. It’s just one of those films that, if you can’t find anything else, you can stick that on, and you’re guaranteed to get a smile on your face and have a few laughs!
