The Response Was Magnificent - Cooper

24 September 2021

Mark Cooper praised his players’ fantastic response to falling behind as they came back to take all three points against Newport County with another strong performance.

It was the visitors who started strongest at The Dunes Hotel Stadium, and they took an early lead but The Bluebirds were superb after the break and roared back to win thanks to goals from Josh Kay and Josh Gordon.

“It was important we got three points even though it was hard work,” Cooper told iFollow.

“Conceding the goal early on was difficult for us and it sapped a bit of our energy, and the fans were a little apprehensive, which I understand, but mistakes like that will happen and it’s down to me.

“I ask the goalkeeper to take risks because what happens in the second half is a by-product of that. You have enough of the ball to dominate the opposition and dominate for long periods.

“We want to be different – we don’t want to be a run of the mill League Two team; we want to be a proper football team and that’s always how I want my teams to play.

“Sometimes it can be edgy, and you will get a punch on the nose like we did tonight, but the lads responded magnificently.

“We showed great energy and tempo in the second half, and I think the fans want to see that rather than just booting the ball forward – the fans here are knowledgeable after Ian Evatt had them playing good football.

“I am delighted for Josh Gordon tonight because it was a stunning goal and he deserved that because he worked so hard.

“It’s a great win, the players were brilliant, and we can look forward to next week now.”
