Preview: Fleetwood Town v Barrow

30 August 2022

Take a look at everything you need to know ahead of Barrow’s Papa John’s Trophy fixture against Fleetwood Town.

Fleetwood Town v Barrow
Tuesday 30th August 2022, kick-off 7pm.
Highbury Stadium
Papa John’s Trophy Group Stage

In Opposition
Fleetwood Town are another team with a new face in the dugout this season. Former Celtic captain Scott Brown is the man at the Highbury helm, as the former midfielder was given the managerial reins earlier this summer.

The former Celtic captain brought numerous new faces to Highbury Stadium in the offseason, including experienced midfielder Josh Vela and 6ft 4in defender Josh Earl. Exciting young striker Callum Morton returned to Fleetwood on a three-year deal, too.

Like Barrow did last Tuesday, Fleetwood enjoyed a 2-2 draw at Lincoln City at the weekend. Town netted a late injury time equaliser to bring a point back up to Lancashire.

Head To Head
The last meeting between the two sides was in last year’s Papa John’s Trophy, when The Cod Army ran out as 3-1 victors. Bluebirds fans may remember Scott Moloney making his outfield debut in that game.

Perhaps the most memorable meeting came in August 2011, when Barrow beat Fleetwood at Holker Street 4-0 in the Blue Square Bet Premier. As a direct response to that hammering, Fleetwood went out and bought Jamie Vardy from FC Halifax Town… and the rest, as they say, is history.

Fleetwood got their revenge in the return fixture, though, as Vardy himself netted a brace in a 4-1 defeat for The Bluebirds.

Referee
Thomas Kirk will be the man with the whistle at Highbury Stadium.

So far this season, he has refereed four Sky Bet League Two fixtures and a Carabao Cup clash between Harrogate Town and Stockport County.

As far as our records show, he has never officiated a fixture involving Barrow or Fleetwood Town.
