Phil Yelland takes a look back on how Salford City have fared during previous trips to Barrow ahead of Tuesday evening's League Two encounter.
Tuesday night will be just The Ammies’ third trip to The Dunes Hotel Stadium and the score in terms of wins stands at one apiece.
Last season’s game was historic. Taking place as it did at the start of December 2020, it was the first time that fans were allowed into the stadium to watch the team back in the Football League. A crowd of just over 1,000 watched, as we struggled to end a run of five league games without a win. Ash Hunter scored the winner for the visitors early in the second half in what was to be David Dunn’s last home game in charge.
Few Barrow fans will forget City’s first visit here on the last Saturday of 2018 in the National League in front of the BT Sport cameras and a crowd of 2,311. We took a first half lead when Jacob Blyth netted his first goal for the Club from the penalty spot. The visitors then had midfielder Gus Mafuta red carded before half time and then, on the hour, equalised with a fine strike from Matt Green. With ten minutes remaining we took the lead for a second time when Kemy Agustien smashed the ball home from outside the box – a goal that will be talked about for years to come. However, The Ammies bounced back again when Ibou Touray levelled things with seven minutes remaining. There was to be another twist in the tail when, deep into injury time from a Josh Kay cross, Blyth (now playing with Chorley in National League North) arrived late at the far post to net the winner.
Let’s hope we can move ahead tonight and claim our second home win.
