Match Report: Barrow 3-0 Crewe Alexandra

29 October 2022

Billy Waters' early strike and a brace from Josh Gordon gives Barrow back-back victories at the SO Legal Stadium, propelling The Bluebirds up to 5th in League Two.

It was Ben Whitfield who provided Waters will the delivery to open the scoring, as the Barrow winger's darting run down the right-hand side saw him deliver a pinpoint cross towards the back post, finding Billy Waters who then finished sublimely into the roof of the net to put The Bluebirds into the lead inside 8 minutes.

The Bluebirds' quick link up play down the right-hand side on the 20th minute mark saw Ben Whitfield pick up the ball, run at the Crewe defence, shrug off the challenge of Zak Williams, before unleashing a wicked shot heading for the bottom left corner but for a brilliant save from Arthur Okonkwo turning Whitfield's effort around the post.

There was a good opportunity for Crewe to level the game 35 minutes on the clock, when a cross was delivered to the back post from Eli King, finding Charlie Finney. Finney whipped the ball back across goal and a fierce shot from Kelvin Mellor was almost converted by a deflection off Tariq Uwakwe from 2 yards out.

Pete Wild's hafltime teamtalk got a little easier, as in the 43rd minute, Barrow doubled their advantage. Whitfield bagged his second assist of the game, as his cross found Josh Gordon on the penalty spot, with the outstretched Gordon netting his 8th goal of the season.

The Railwaymen started the second half brightly, and on the 48th minute Daniel Agyei released a shot from the edge of the area, which needed to be pushed over the bar by substitute goalkeeper Josh Lillis, who had come on to replace a paternal Paul Farman at the break.

On the hour mark, Josh Gordon scored his second goal of the game and Barrow’s third. The Barrow striker finished off his quick counter attack with solo effort, calmy past Arthur Okonkwo after intercepting Zak Williams on the half way line.

Barrow pushed forward for a fourth, which almost came through David Moyo, who couldn’t quite convert from close range on the 82nd minute. Crewe came forward a minute later, but ex-Bluebird striker Courtney Baker-Richardson couldn’t quite get his header on target from Eli King’s cross.

Sam Foley's audacious shot from the half way line almost caught Arthur Akonkwo out, who just managed to scramble back in time to palm it over the bar to keep the scoreline at three.
