Match Report: Northampton Town 3-1 Barrow

4 September 2022

Barrow fell to defeat at Sixfields Stadium, following a short spell at the start of the second half that saw the hosts convert twice from crosses to put an end to The Bluebirds' winning run.

Barrow started the game the brightest, and Pete Wild might’ve been disappointed to not be leading in the very first minute when Josh Gordon saw his effort saved by Northampton Town goalkeeper Lee Burge.

Ben Whitfield came close to setting up an opener just a couple minutes later, when his flashed ball across the box just evaded Gordon.

Another early chance came 60 seconds later, when Niall Canavan met a Patrick Brough corner; his header just falling wide of the target.

Perhaps against the run of play, Northampton were the ones to break the deadlock when Sam Hoskins received the ball on the edge of the box and calmly placed a shot beyond the reach of Paul Farman into the bottom left corner.

The Cobblers weren’t leading for long, though, as Sam Foley played Josh Gordon into the box, who fired it past Lee Burge at the near post for his 5th goal of the season; bringing Barrow back level.

It was the start to the second half that left Barrow boss Pete Wild frustrated; Northampton scoring twice in 5 minutes to reach an unassailable lead.

Ali Koiki swung a ball towards an unmarked Kieron Bowie who headed it past Paul Farman to send the hosts back in front, and Tyler Magloire was at the back post to nod Mitch Pinnock's cross into the net for Northampton’s third.

Barrow didn’t give up fighting though. Ben Whitfield's 57th minute free kick resulted in a goalmouth scramble, but Josh Gordon's effort couldn’t quite get over the line.

Five minutes later, the Barrow players and bench were convinced that Robbie Gotts had been fouled in the area, but the referee didn’t agree and waved play on.

David Moyo saw his headed effort be palmed onto the underside of the bar in injury time, but it just wasn’t Barrow’s day.
