John Rooney Departs The Bluebirds

27 September 2022

Barrow Association Football Club can confirm that we have agreed to cancel John Rooney’s contract by mutual consent.

Rooney played a key role in The Bluebirds’ promotion from the National League in 2019/20, proudly wearing the captain’s armband as the Club secured their historic return to the EFL.

His astonishing form saw him fire 20 goals from midfield during the landmark campaign, including a memorable hat-trick in the 7-0 thrashing of Ebbsfleet United in January 2020.

Stockport County paid a fee to take him to Edgeley Park that summer, with Rooney going on to net 23 goals in just 62 appearances for The Hatters.

The Liverpool-born midfielder rejoined Barrow in January of this year, finding the net 5 times to help secure the Club’s EFL status; playing a vital role in the run-in and scoring the decisive goal against Sutton United to see The Bluebirds to League Two safety.

Barrow Chairman Paul Hornby placed on record his gratitude for Rooney’s efforts in a Barrow shirt across both spells.

“Everybody at Barrow will forever be grateful for what John Rooney did in both spells at the Club.

“He helped us create lifelong memories in the National League winning season, playing a huge part in helping the Club achieve the impossible dream.

“We wish John the very best for the future.”
