Match Preview: Accrington Stanley Vs Barrow AFC

15 August 2023

Having defeated Sutton United at the weekend Barrow faces another tricky test at the hands of Accrington Stanley tonight.

Pete Wild’s men kicked off their season in fine fashion, winning both of their opening games in the Sky Bet League Two 2-1. Wild’s men first defeated Tranmere Rovers on the opening day, whilst they left it late on Saturday to secure victory against ten-man Sutton.

Strikers Emile Acquah and Jamie Proctor both bagged their first Barrow goals at the weekend, with the latter coming off the bench to score the winning goal on his debut.

The Bluebirds now travel to the Wham Stadium, hoping to make it three wins out of three.

Team news

We’ll be without Mazeed Ogungbo who continues to recover from his torn meniscus sustained in pre-season.

Whilst we’ll also be without Ben Whitfield who continues to recover from an Achilles issue.

The opposition

Stanley recorded an impressive 3-0 opening-day victory over Newport County. However, since then they lost in the Cup to Bradford City, while also losing at Gillingham on Saturday.

Accrington were relegated from League One last year having recorded an impressive five-year stint in England’s third division, all whilst under the guidance of current boss John Coleman.

Coleman was the man to get the Lancashire side promoted to League One in the 2017/2018 season, so we’re sure he’ll have high aspirations of achieving the same fate this year.

The sides have only met twice since the Bluebirds’ return to the Football League.

Both of those fixtures took place in the EFL Trophy with Stanley winning the first clash 1-0. Whilst the return fixture ended in a 2-2 draw with Accrington winning 5-4 on penalty kicks.

Andrew Kitchen is today’s referee and he’ll be joined by Shaun Hudson and Daniel Leach.

Thomas Kirk will be the fourth official.

Tickets can still be purchased at the SO Legal Stadium, or the Wham Stadium.
