Match Preview: Barrow AFC vs Stockport County

26 December 2023

Barrow extended their record-winning run after gaining their seventh league victory in a row against Crewe Alexandra. Pete Wild’s men now face Stockport County on Boxing Day in a top-of-the-table clash.

The Bluebirds’ previous game came in the league on Friday night when they faced Crewe away. The game saw both sides have multiple chances in the game, but the Cumbrian side produced more on the night, resulting in a 3-1 win away from home.

Looking ahead to the Boxing Day clash, Wild’s side has now won seven straight league games and gone unbeaten in their previous 11 league games.

In Friday’s game, they won 3-1 away to Crewe, who were placed in fifth place going into the fixture. The game saw goals from Ged Garner and Ben Whitfield who grabbed a brace to wrap up all three points for the Bluebirds.

Team News

Junior Tiensia has undergone successful surgery on his Ankle Ligament following an injury sustained away at MK Dons.

Tyrell Warren has also been stepping up his return to injury and has been involved in more light training this week.

The Opposition

Stockport County currently sits in first place in the league with 49 points. When you look at Stockport’s previous five league fixtures, they have accumulated eight points with one loss, two wins, and two draws.

Taking a look at the opposition in more depth, the star man Barrow needs to look out for is striker and top scorer Isaac Olaofe. In December 2022 he made the permanent move to Stockport County, where so far, he has made 50 appearances, with 28 coming this season, he has also scored 17 goals for the club with 14 of those coming this season.

Now another player the Bluebirds supporters should look out for is veteran attacker and captain, Paddy Madden. An experienced player with experience in leagues of the EFL, and three promotions throughout his time in England. He is influential to the side and has made 26 appearances this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting three times.

Head-To-Head

Since Barrow’s return to the EFL, the sides have faced each other a total of three times, with one of these games coming earlier this season. Barrow has won two out of the three previous fixtures between the sides.

Last season the first match was played away at the Lancashire side’s ground on the 30th of July 2022. Barrow started that game well, and we didn’t have to wait long for the first goal. The move started well from Barrow when Whitfield assisted Josh Gordan. Only 14 minutes later Barrow found themselves two goals in front, when Whitfield scored his first with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box. The Bluebirds scored their third goal in 33 minutes when Billy Waters took a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner. In the second half, Madden assisted Stockport’s first goal, when he crossed the ball into Antoni Sarcevic, who made it 3-1. With 20 minutes remaining Stockport scored a second goal from an assist by Macauley Southam-Hales, who crossed it into Madden who scored to make it 3-2. However, Barrow defended well and secured the 3-2 win, and took all three points back up to Holker Street.

The reverse fixture between the two sides came up at Holker Street in February earlier this year. Going into the game, the Bluebirds were putting a bad run of form behind them. Both teams created multiple chances in the opening stages of the game, but both sides failed to convert their chances throughout the first half, and it was a stalemate between the two sides going into halftime. But in the 69th minute, the Bluebirds broke the deadlock and scored the opener in the fixture. The goal came when Ged Garner crossed the ball into Josh Kay, who took a right-footed shot from the right side of the goal, which rifled past Ben Hinchliffe in the Stockport net, and down the centre of the net. Barrow continued to defend well and secured all three points over the Lancashire side completing the league double over them in the process.

Referee

Martin Coy is the man in charge tomorrow and he has taken charge of 14 games in the EFL this season and has handed out a total of three red cards in that time.

The last time Coy took charge of a game involving the Bluebirds came all the way back in September 2023 when we picked up a 1-1 draw, away to Newport County, courtesy of a Dean Campbell penalty.

Joining him tomorrow will be Simon Clayton and Darren Williams, whilst David McNamara will be the Fourth Official.
