First Team Performance Analyst Scholarship

Barrow AFC, in partnership with the Global Institute of Sport (GIS), is offering an exciting scholarship placement opportunity to a dynamic, self-motivated individual who is committed to a career in Performance Analysis. The successful candidate needs to be studying at/or hold an offer for a postgraduate master’s degree in Football Coaching & Analysis or Performance Analysis in Football at GIS.

As a club, we believe in offering hands-on experience in an elite football environment to those wishing to join the industry professionally. The GIS football-specific Master’s courses are the ideal grounding from which to build a career and we believe we can play our role in the growth of a football professional by giving them the opportunity to learn in our environment alongside our staff working with our players.  

 "The link will allow students to not only experience the day-to-day workings of a Football League performance analysis department, but to play an active role in providing elite-level analysis to players and staff as well as using the tools at the club, including Hudl, Wyscout, Statsbomb, to complete their Master’s studies.  

 "The performance analysis scholarship is an exciting opportunity for a student to play a key role in the development of the club and to be an important member of our First Team and B Team staff.  The GIS has a track record of providing advantageous experiences for its students, not only in the UK but across Europe, and we are delighted to partner with them for the benefit of their enrolled students."  

The successful candidate will gain first-hand experience, working within a fast-paced First Team environment at a club competing in League Two. Applicants should ideally be based in the Greater Manchester / North West area to enable commuting to Barrow AFC training facility at FC United of Manchester and So Legal Stadium in Barrow in Furness.

 

 Overview: 

  • The successful candidate will be available to work 3-4 days a week, the hours are 10-12 hours + additional hours (subject to change and discussion). The hours may include unsociable hours.  
  • The role will be predominantly based at the club’s training facilities at FC United in Manchester, with travel to other sites within the UK and the possibility for remote work. 
  • Applicants should be willing to commit to the full 2023/24 season, with the successful candidate starting in July or early August 2023. 
  • £1500 towards GIS tuition fees will be provided. 
  • 25p per mile travel expenses (or public transport cost contribution) is available for matchday working. 

 

Roles & Responsibilities, Learning Opportunities: 

  • The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside full-time analysts, develop practitioner skills, knowledge, and experience to deliver elite-level performance analysis. 
  • Support the performance analysis staff in providing analytical support to First Team and B Team players, coaches and staff. 
  • Film and capture First Team matches and training. 
  • Prepare pre-match opposition reports.  
  • Collaborate with B Team Head Coach to oversee fixtures (home & away), providing pre-, in-game, and post-match analysis. 
  • The opportunity to develop a working knowledge of key performance analysis software (e.g., Hudl, Sportscode, Statsbomb, Wyscout, Keynote, R, Python) 
  • The opportunity to be involved in a range of personal development openings such as internal meetings, workshops, and external conferences.

The Candidate: 

  • A commitment to a career in performance analysis or data analysis (Essential) 
  • Working toward a master’s degree in Football Coaching & Analysis and Performance Analysis in Football at GIS with an offer or existing place (Essential) 
  • Ability to carry out solo projects, or to work as part of a team fitting with the work ethic of the club (Essential) 
  • Being committed, punctual, and professional at all times, receptive to feedback, and skilled in building relationships with other members of the team (Essential) 
  • Good organisation and communications skills with attention to detail (Essential) 
  • Adhere to a strict code of confidentiality on matters relating to Barrow AFC and its operations.   
  • Own a car and a full UK driving license (Desirable) 
  • Personal MacBook (Essential) 
  • Previous experience in an elite-level environment (Desirable)
