Match Preview: Morecambe vs Barrow AFC

9 October 2023

After an impressive point against league leaders Notts County on Saturday, the Bluebirds will be hoping to push on tomorrow evening away to Morecambe.

Pete Wild’s side went toe to toe with Notts on Saturday and were unlucky to only get a point from the game after we limited them to just a penalty despite them being the top scorers in the league, having scored 27 goals in 12 matches.

The point leaves us 12th in League Two despite us having played a game less than most of the sides in the division.

We currently sit third in our EFL Trophy group, behind Liverpool U21s and Blackpool, Barrow could potentially rise to the second in the group on goal difference with a win tomorrow night, depending on results elsewhere.

Team news

Tomorrow night we will be without Jamie Proctor who continues to recover from his adductor injury, whilst Tyrell Warren is also out after damaging his hamstring on Saturday.

Junior Tiensia is now back in the mix having served his suspension following his red card at Mansfield.

The opposition.

Morecambe currently sits two places higher than Barrow in League Two with two more points. However, due to losing their game against Liverpool’s U21s 3-0 in the EFL trophy, they currently sit bottom of the EFL Trophy group.

In their most recent outing, they enjoyed a 3-1 victory away to Colchester in a game which saw John McKiernan score a hat trick.

It will be an exciting match between the sides, regardless of the competition as Morecambe are currently unbeaten at home in League Two and will be looking to push on from their relegation to League Two last season.

Head-to-head

Barrow last played Morecambe in the 2020/21 season, losing 2-1 at Holket Street with Scott Quigley scoring our only goal whilst we also lost 1-0 away. Those two games are the only two meetings between the sides since we returned to the Football League.

However, with the improvements the Bluebirds have made since Pete Wild’s appointment, and the recent relegation from League One for the opposition, this suggests it’ll be a very different fixture for both sides.

Referee

The man in charge tomorrow is Simon Mather who last refereed us last season when was lost 3:1 to Hartlepool United, with Mather dishing out red cards to Patrick Brough and Harrison Neal.

Joining him tomorrow will be Karl Buckley and Paul Stonier, whilst Trevor Massey is the fourth official.
