Match Report: Doncaster Rovers 4-2 Barrow AFC

20 April 2024

Doncaster Rovers staged a late comeback to come from 2-0 down to defeat Barrow 4-2.

Barrow had led 2-0 at the break thanks to headers from the inform Emile Acquah and Rory Feely but Joe Ironside bagged a brace whilst Harrison Biggins and Hakeeb Adelakun also got on the scoresheet to secure victory for the home side.

Coming into the match, Pete Wild made one change to the side that gained a point away to Crawley Town with Sam Foley coming in for Dom Telford.

Once the game got underway, the home side nearly found a breakthrough in the opening minute when Luke Molyneux pounced quickest to a through ball, but Paul Farman got down well to keep the score level.

With both sides creating multiple chances at both ends, Emile Acquah finally broke the dead lock in the 35th minute when he headed the Bluebirds into the lead from a superb cross from Robbie Gotts, netting his ninth goal of the campaign.

As the first half drew to a close it was the Cumbrians who finished in style with Rory Feely heading home from a corner to double the lead heading into the second period.

After an even stronger start to the second period, things soon turned sour for the Bluebirds after Joe Ironside was brought down inside the box by Niall Canavan. Ironside stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick and he dispatched away.

The pendulum soon swung into the favour of the Yorkshire outfit with the home side coming agonisingly close to equalising when a header toward goal was cleared off the line by Sam Foley.

With the home crowd and players giving their all, Doncaster were rewarded for their efforts with just five minutes of the game remaining when Hakeeb Adelakun smashed the ball past Farman to get the game back on level terms.

Then only three minutes later, the Vikings found themselves in front for the first time this afternoon when Harrison Biggins netted his third goal of the season to put the home side in front with a tidy header.

Once the Bluebirds fell behind in the game, they struggled to gain their foothold back in it with Doncaster continuing to dominate possession and ultimately scoring their fourth goal of the afternoon, when Ironside received the ball from a low cross into the Barrow box, he then managed to tap it home from close range, to keep all three points in South Yorkshire.

Barrow XI: Farman, Campbell, Canavan ©, Spence, Newby, Gotts (Whitfield 70’), Foley, Chester, Stephenson (Warren 80’), Acquah (Stockton 70’), Feely (Telford 90’).
