Match Preview: Barrow AFC vs Bradford City

23 February 2024

The Bluebirds are looking to do a league double over Bradford City for the second consecutive season as they host the Bantams tomorrow afternoon.

During their latest run out, the Bluebirds suffered a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Salford City. There was some good to come out of the game though as Tyrell Warren made his first start in over four months following an extended period on the side-lines and even bagged a goal.

Cole Stockton also found himself on the scoresheet yet again after he scored twice in the game, with one of them being a sensational curling shot into the far corner, from 20 yards out to put Barrow back on level terms before half time. That mean he has now bagged four goals in five starts, since joining the Bluebirds.

Team News

Junior Tiensia is stepping up his return from injury and has been involved some training over the past few weeks now.

Jamie Proctor will be unavailable for tomorrow’s match as he continues to serve his four-match suspension.

The Opposition

Saturday’s opposition Bradford City currently sits in 13th place in the Sky Bet League Two table under the guidance of former Scunthorpe United boss Graham Alexander.

Bradford is onto their second manager of the season, and since the appointment of Alexander in November 2023, he has managed 21 games, winning 11, drawing five and losing five. He has managed to maintain a win percentage of 52.4%, whilst averaging 1.8 points per game.

In their previous five league encounters, they have picked up ten points having won three times and drawn once. You’ll have to go back to January to find their last loss, where on the 27th of January they fell short against Swindon Town, losing 2-0 at The County Ground.

A star plays to watch out for his striker and top scorer, Andy Cook. Since joining The Bantams initially on loan, he has made a total of 125 appearances, and scored 61 goals. So far this season, Cook has been an influential player to the Yorkshire side, scoring 13 league goals in 30 league appearances.

Head-to-Head

Barrow have played Bradford a total of seven times since our return to the EFL, with four of those games ending in victory for the Bluebirds, as The Bantams ran out victorious on two occasions, with just one game ending in a draw.

The previous game between the two sides at Holker Street came in August 2022, on a day in which the Cumbrian side secured a memorable win with goals from Ben Whitfield, Josh Kay and Josh Gordan collecting all three points for us.

The two sides have already faced each other this season back in November at Valley Parade, when the game ended 1-2 to the Bluebirds, on Graham Alexander’s first match in charge of the Bantams. Goals from Dom Telford and George Ray picked up all three points for the Cumbrians as they headed back up to Holker Street. That winning goal from George Ray was his first goal for the club and he has since gone onto bag another two.

Referee

Experienced referee Tom Nield has been charged with taking control of tomorrow’s game. He has previously refereed the Bluebirds on three occasions. The most recent match involving the Bluebirds took place back in November 2022 when Mansfield Town defeated us 1-0 at Holker Street thanks to a strike from current Gillingham striker Oli Hawkins.

Tomorrow he will be joined by Jonathan Hunt, Matthew McGrath, and Ben Wyatt.
