Match Preview: Barrow AFC vs MK Dons

2 February 2024

After a hard-earned point away at Notts County last weekend, the Bluebirds have another tricky fixture tomorrow afternoon when they host an inform MK Dons side.

The Bluebirds’ previous game came last Saturday when they faced Notts County at Meadow Lane. The game saw Barrow take an early lead thanks to a brave header from Kian Spence. As the game went on Barrow continued to create a number of chances but the home side equalised before halftime and secure themselves a point.

Spence’s goal against Notts County was his sixth goal of the season, taking his total goal contribution tally to 12 goals this season.

Whilst January signing Cole Stockton also looked sharp in what was his first start for the club.

Team News

Junior Tiensia is continuing his injury rehabilitation following his Ankle Ligament injury and this week has been back running on the grass.

The Opposition

Saturday’s opposition are currently having a good spell of form, with their previous game against Gillingham ending in a 2-1 victory which means they currently find themselves sitting in sixth place in the League Two table.

The Dons' recent form in their last nine league games shows they have picked up 21 points, with seven wins and two losses.

Since the arrival of manager Mike Williamson in October 2023, the Dons have accumulated more points in the division than any other side, having picked up 32 points in just sixteen matches.

A key player for Bluebirds’ supporters to look out for is striker and top scorer Max Dean. Since Dean made the move to Milton Keynes in 2022, he has gone on to make 34 appearances whilst scoring 13 goals. So far this season, Dean has made 18 appearances and scored 12 goals.

Head-to-Head

The two sides have only faced each other once, in a fixture which took place earlier this season back in October. Therefore, Dons fans will be making their first-ever trip to the SO Legal Satdium tomorrow.

Last October when the sides met, Barrow had picked up just two wins in the previous nine league games, whereas MK Dons had failed to win in their previous seven league fixtures.

It was The Dons who started the game well and Max Dean deservedly put the home side 1-0 up in the 12th minute, when he took a right footed shot from outside the box, which rifled into the bottom right corner. Then just 23 minutes later, Dean found himself with his second of the game, when he headed MK Dons 2-0 in front, from close range. The Bluebirds defended well from that point onwards, but also created multiple chances throughout the game, with their best coming when Elliott Newby had his header saved superbly by Craig McGillivray in the Dons' net. As the game progressed and we got closer to full-time, Wild’s men created more and more chances and were rewarded for their efforts when Ben Whitfield scored with a right-footed shot, down the centre of the goal from a David Worrall cross. With just three minutes of added time remaining, the Bluebirds surged up the field again and Emile Acquah received the ball outside the box, and he took on a curled shot into the top right corner scoring the goal to bring the Cumbrian side from behind and level. The away side defended resolutely in the final minutes of the game and managed to secure the point at the Stadium MK, and a draw which would see the beginning of their fantastic 12-league game unbeaten run.

Referee

The man in charge tomorrow is Tom Reeves who has previously refereed the Bluebirds on five occasions. The last time he took charge of a Bluebirds fixture was back in October when we defeated Forest Green Rovers 2-0 thanks to goals from Sam Foley and Dom Telford.

Tomorrow he will be accompanied by Simon Clayton, Stephen Wade, and Michael Barlow who is tomorrow’s fourth official.
