Match Preview: Barrow AFC vs Crewe Alexandra

19 January 2024

Barrow will be looking to get back to winning ways after they drew 2-2 with a very resilient Sutton United side last weekend.

Pete Wild’s men deservedly raced into a 1-0 lead in South London last week thanks to Ben Whitfield’s 10th goal of the season. But Barrow soon found themselves behind after a quickfire brace from Harry Beautyman either side of the break. But Captain Niall Canavan equalised for the Bluebirds who had several chances to win the game but ultimately came away with a point.

The Bluebirds will be hoping a return to the SO Legal Stadium will bring about some good fortune. This season they have made Holker Street a fortress having played 12 games, recorded six wins, and six draws, and kept clean sheets in six of our past eight home games.

Team News

Junior Tiensia is continuing his injury rehabilitation following his Ankle Ligament injury.

New signing Cole Stockton will also be available for team selection, having joined the Bluebirds on loan from Burton Albion earlier this week.

The Opposition

Saturday’s opposition Crewe Alexandra are currently flying high in the League Two table and occupies fifth place, leaving the visitors just two points behind Barrow.

Crewe have been in some form lately and have recorded an impressive three wins and one draw in their last four matches, including a big win over Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium.

Most recently they defeated Swindon Town 2-1 at the Mornflake Stadium thanks to goals from Elliott Nevitt and Courtney Baker-Richardson.

Head-To-Head

The two sides have only faced each other three times since Barrow’s return to the EFL and we have won two and Crewe has won the other.

Last season the first match was played at Holker Street on the 29th of October 2022. Barrow started that game well, and we didn’t have to wait long for the first goal. The move started well from Barrow when Ben Whitfield crossed the ball into Billy Waters, who’s left footed shot from the left side of the side-yard box, rifled into the top left corner. Just before half-time, Whitfield crossed the ball into the Crewe box which was met with a right-footed shot from Josh Gordan, who put the ball into the bottom left corner and past Arthur Okonkwo in the Crewe net. As the game progressed into halftime both sides had created a multitude of opportunities, however, it was Barrow who had capitalised on their chances. In the second half, Josh Gordon found himself in on goal again and scored with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the goal to secure a 3-0 win.

Whilst the match which took place earlier this season also saw the Bluebirds score three goals, this time away from home. Ben Whitfield after the scoring early on when he cleverly steered David Worrall’s looping cross into the back of the net. Shortly after the break Ged Garner smashed home a low penalty after George Ray was shoved in the back. Elliott Nevitt pulled one back from a corner shortly after. But Whitfield secured Barrow all three points when he headed home Robbie Gotts’ cross.

Referee

Tom Parsons is tomorrow’s referee and he has officiated the Bluebirds on two occasions since our return to the EFL. The most recent fixture took place on Boxing Day in 2022 when we drew 1-1 away at Salford city thanks to a late goal from Jordan Stevens.

Alongside him tomorrow is Daniel Woodward, Bradley Hallt, and Darren Williams is the fourth official.
