Match Preview: Barrow AFC vs Gillingham

4 March 2024

The Bluebirds are looking to get back to winning ways as they face Gillingham at Holker Street in their first game in over two weeks due to postponed fixtures against Bradford City and Crawley Town.

Pete Wild’s side had last Saturday’s fixture against Crawley Town postponed, after a pitch inspection deemed The Reds’ pitch unplayable by referee Will Finnie on the day before the match.

The Bluebirds now find themselves about to play their first game in over two weeks, hoping to win their first game since the 3rd of February, when they beat MK Dons at Holker Street.

During their latest runout, the Bluebirds suffered a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Salford City. There was some good to come out of the game though as Tyrell Warren made his first start in over four months following an extended period on the sidelines and even bagged a goal.

Cole Stockton also continued his flying start to life as a Bluebird after he bagged his fourth goal in Blue and White.

Team News

Junior Tiensia is back in full training now whilst Jamie Proctor remains unavailable for tomorrow’s match as he continues to serve his four-match suspension.

The Opposition

Tomorrow’s opposition Gillingham currently sits in 7th place in the Sky Bet League Two table just one place ahead of the Bluebirds.

In their previous five league encounters, they have picked up eight points, having won twice and drawn twice. Their latest fixture ended in a routine 2-0 win away from home, against Lancashire side, Salford City.

A star player to watch out for is winger, Connor Mahoney. Since joining the Gills in August 2023, he has gone on to make 30 appearances, scoring five goals and assisting three times in all competitions.

Head-to-Head

Barrow has faced Gillingham twice since our return to the EFL with both of these games taking place last season. The Bluebirds are yet to face defeat against the Gills, with the first meeting between the sides ending in a draw and the second ending in a Bluebirds victory at Holker Street.

The two sides last faced each other back on April 1st, 2023 at Holker Street, when the game ended 2-1 to the Bluebirds. The game started with Glenn Morris scoring an own goal in the first ten minutes, to put the Cumbrian side 1-0 up. However, after defending well the away side scored an equaliser in the 82nd minute, when Conor Masterson’s goal made it 1-1. But the final chance of the game saw another twist in the game as Robbie Gotts scored a right-footed shot from outside the box to make It 2-1 and win the game for the Bluebirds in stoppage time.

Referee

Referee Scott Tallis has been charged with taking charge of the fixture. He has refereed 20 EFL games this season, handing out 80 yellow cards and two red cards.

The last time he refereed a match featuring the Bluebirds was back in October 2023 when we picked up a point away against AFC Wimbledon at Holker Street, thanks to a Man of the Match performance from shot-stopper Paul Farman.

He will be joined by Assistant Referees, Emmanuel Edet and Johnathon Bickerdale. With Stuart Morland as the Fourth Official.
