Match Report: Barrow AFC 3-1 Grimsby Town

29 March 2024

The Bluebirds ended March unbeaten with their fourth win of the month as they claimed a comfortable 3-1 win over Grimsby Town.

Pete Wild named an unchanged lineup, keeping faith with the side that ran out 1-0 winners against Newport County, although Jamie Proctor replaced Luca Stephenson on the bench.

The game began with a fast tempo, with the Mariners making their presence known in the second minute of the game when Denver Hume made a cross into the box which found Kieran Green whose header missed just wide of the left post.

But the Bluebirds began to gain momentum in the game and struck back nine minutes later, when Cole Stockton found himself on the end of a Ben Whitfield assist, to finish exquisitely into the bottom left corner Cartwright to bag our first of the afternoon.

Ten minutes later, Stockton again was on the end of another huge change for the Bluebirds after Tyrell Warren made a driving run down the right-hand side, he then managed to cross in an excellent ball to Stockton, who headed superbly but his chance was saved efficiently by Harvey Cartwright in the Town goal.

It wasn’t long before Stockton got his second of the game when he put the Cumbrians 2-0 in front on 22 minutes when he smashed home Barrow’s second of the game from close range after Dom Telford was denied by a fine block on the line.

Wild’s men came out for the second half on the offense, with the Bluebirds winning a set piece in the 47th minute. Whitfield's cross was met by the head of Stockton, who headed just wide of the post as he searches for his first hat-trick in Blue and White.

As the second half progressed, the Mariners began to gain momentum and created a huge opportunity to pull a goal back when Harry Clifton received the ball on the edge of the box following a corner, he then took on his shot from range, but the ball fizzed left of the post.

The Cumbrians made it 3-0 in the 82nd minute after David Worrall was fouled by Charles Vernam. The resulting set piece saw Robbie Gotts receive the ball in the centre of the Grimsby area, he then managed to get his shot away neatly to score his second of the season and Barrow’s third of the afternoon.

The Mariners managed to score a consolation goal in the last minute of normal time when Justin Obikwu finished superbly to pull one back for the Lincolnshire side.

A victory today sees Wild’s men climb up to fifth in the Sky Bet League Two table and just five points away from an automatic promotion space.
