Match Preview: Doncaster Rovers vs Barrow AFC

19 April 2024

After an impressive performance away to Crawley Town on Tuesday night, the Bluebirds now face a trip to an inform Doncaster Rovers side tomorrow.

Pete Wild’s men put in an impressive performance on Tuesday night, as they earned a point after a 1-1 draw, against play-off hopefuls, Crawley.

In a game that saw the home side dominate with 71% possession, the Bluebirds stood firm defensively whilst creating more chances than Crawley and were rewarded for their efforts when Emile Acquah put the Cumbrian side 0-1 up. But the Red Devils pulled one back with a penalty in the 64th minute, which was dispatched neatly by Danilo Orsi.

Acquah’s goal on Tuesday night was his eighth goal since joining the Bluebirds in the summer from non-league side Maidenhead United.

George Ray remains side-lined as he continues to serve his three-match ban.

The Opposition

Saturday’s opposition Doncaster Rovers currently sits in 9th place in the Sky Bet League Two table under the guidance of manager Grant McCann.

Doncaster reappointed McCann as their manager in May 2023, and since the appointment he has managed 54 matches, winning 25, drawing eight, and losing 21. He has maintained a win percentage of 46.3%, whilst averaging 1.5 points per game.

Doncaster are currently on an impressive streak of form which has only seen them lose one game in their last 15, whilst winning 11 of the fixtures. In their five previous league encounters, they have picked up 15 points. Their latest fixture ended in a 4-0 victory at the Eco-Power Stadium as they faced 18th-placed Accrington Stanley.

A star player to watch out for is flair winger, Hakeeb Adelakun. Since joining Rovers in January 2024, Adelakun has gone on to make a total of 16 appearances, whilst scoring eight goals for the Yorkshire outfit.

Head-to-Head

Barrow has only faced Saturday’s opponents three times since our return to the EFL, with two of those games ending in victory for us.

The two sides have already faced each other once this season back in September 2023 at Holker Street when the Bluebirds edged victorious. The game saw the scoring opened with an early goal from Tyrell Warren. We soon doubled our leads when Ged Garner bagged a goal from a freekick. Doncaster pulled one back with Joe Ironside on 56 minutes, but Acquah scored the Bluebirds' third of the afternoon in the 85th minute to get the home back in front at Holker Street.

As full time approached the away side managed to shorten the gap again with Mo Faal scoring in added time to bring the score back to 3-2. But it wasn’t enough for the away side and Barrow ran out 3-2 winners in an end-to-end game.

Referee

Referee Carl Brook has been tasked with the job of taking control of the Bluebirds’ final away game of the season. He has refereed 26 matches across the EFL leagues this season, with 11 of those coming in League Two. Throughout the 26 fixtures, Brook has handed out 120 yellow cards, but only two red cards.

The last time Brook refereed a match featuring the Bluebirds was back in November 2022 when we fell to a 1-0 defeat against Crawley Town.

He will be joined by Assistant referees, Anthony Da Costa and Marvyn Amphlett. Delan Ford will be the Fourth Official.
